Tornado in Devine

MEDINA COUNTY — Families in rural Medina County walked outside to a wasteland on Tuesday morning after an overnight EF2 tornado and heavy winds overturned cars, tossed power lines and ripped apart about 30 homes.

Aerial footage shows the twister made a northeast path of destruction across several homes, mobile homes and other structures just outside of Devine — about 25 miles southwest of San Antonio.

Meteorologists for the National Weather Service were surveying damage near Devine and also in Natalia, in southwest Bexar County, where another tornado destroyed at least two mobile homes and damaged other properties.

“We’re out here trying to determine the actual track and the path and then hopefully estimate the wind speeds associated with the actual tornado,” said Paul Yara of the NWS.

The Medina County Sheriff’s Office also surveyed the damage from a helicopter and at last count estimated about 30 homes were destroyed in the storm and even more homes and vehicles were also damaged.

Officials said several residents were injured by flying debri but are all expected to be OK.

“Especially at night time when you have some inclimate weather that comes in, you don’t know what your dealing with,” said Deputy Chief Chris Champion. “And our primary concern was public safety.”

Residents are also continuing to assess damage caused by the overnight storm and are cleaning up what little the storm left behind.

A fireplace and a few walls are that’s left of the Flores family’s home on Highway 173, just west of Devine. Their teen daughter took shelter Monday night in the bathroom as the entire house began to shake. The roof was ripped off from over her head, yet she emerged from the bathroom unharmed.

David Franz, a chaplain for the Medina County Sheriff’s Office, told about how one woman ran to the bathroom with her children and used her body as a shield to protect them as their house blew away.

“That was a God thing,” Franz said. “That tornado went around there and she survived. It was miraculous.”

The Salvation Army and the Red Cross of San Antonio are lending a hand in to residents in need. The Red Cross is serving hot drinks and snacks to victims of the storm and are preparing to serve hot meals to 500 people.

Crews were repairing downed power lines Tuesday as homeowners assessed damage to their homes and property.

The Medina County sheriff is expected to hold a press conference Tuesday afternoon to provide an update on the storm that devastated the rural community.

Anyone wishing to help is encouraged to call the Red Cross at (210) 224-5151.

Texting Prank Backfires!

An Arkansas teen thought sending a random text message that she ‘hid the body’ would elicit a few laughs. The message sparked a police investigation instead.

The 15-year from northwest Arkansas had blind texted “I hid the body … Now what?” to a police detective.

“Just in the 479 area code, we probably got half a million phone numbers and she just randomly picks the phone number of a Rogers Police Detective,” Rogers Police Officer Keith Foster told CBS affiliate.

The teen got the idea for the prank from a posting on social media photo site Pinterest.

Police used an emergency phone trace to track her cellphone number.

“Not knowing if the text was a prank or a legitimate text, detective began an investigation into the source of the message,“ a news release stated.

Police learned the text was a prank after questioning the teen and her father, and released her with a warning, according to reports.

Ghost Daughter: “They may have been just word, but I believed every one because they came from you.

The truth is, you don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow. Life is crazy and nothing is guaranteed.
